Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’ daughter, reportedly criticized her mother’s biopic script entitled Priscilla. Lisa expressed this protest via email, four months before she died in January 2023. According to a Variety report on Thursday (2/11), Lisa sent the letter to the film’s director, Sofia Coppola. He criticized director Priscilla for portraying his father as just a predator and manipulative.
“My father just looks predatory and manipulative. As his daughter, I do not agree with this and do not see my father in this character,” said Lisa in the letter, as reported by Variety.
“I don’t agree with this script and don’t see my mother’s point of view towards my father,” he continued.
Lisa then asked Sofia Coppola not to confuse her fragile relationship with Priscilla. He admitted that he did not want the biopic to haunt Elvis Presley’s grandchildren in the future. Not only that, Lisa considered that Priscilla’s script only contained Sofia Coppola’s vengeful and insulting point of view. This condition, said Lisa, would force her to oppose Coppola and her mother who also joined as executive producers for the project.
“I read this and see your very vengeful and insulting point of view and I don’t understand why?” wrote the daughter of Elvis and Priscilla.
“I will be forced into a position where I have to openly say how I feel about this film and stand up to you, my mother, and this film publicly,” he continued.
Meanwhile, Sofia Coppola, through her representative, responded with the answer the director gave personally to Lisa in an email. Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter admitted that her film was in line with Lisa’s expectations. He also hopes that Lisa can feel a different impression when she watches Priscilla when it is released. However, this wish has not yet come true because Lisa passed away in early 2023.
“I hope that when you see this film, you will have a different impression and understand that I was careful to pay tribute to your mother while bringing sensitivity and complexity to your father,” said Sofia Coppola.
Priscilla is a biopic that tells the story of the life of Priscilla Presley, Elvis Presley’s ex-wife. This film is adapted from Priscilla’s memoir entitled Elvis and Me, which was published in 1985. The film was written and directed by Sofia Coppola. He is known as the director of a series of hit films, such as Lost in Translation (2003) and Marie Antoinette (2006).
Priscilla stars Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as Priscilla and Elvis Presley. This film premiered at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival.
